South Africa start a three-match ODI series against Australia in Durban on September 24, and the tour immediately feeds into their longer build towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. Temba Bavuma is back to lead the 50-over side for the first time since December 2025, while several senior names have also returned to the squad.
Experienced Names Return for a Key White-Ball Block
The Proteas have brought back a strong group for the series, giving the squad a far more familiar look than the one that faced Namibia in their last ODI outing. Along with Bavuma, South Africa have recalled Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, Corbin Bosch and Quinton de Kock.
That mix gives the selectors a chance to test combinations against top opposition while still keeping one eye on the 2027 World Cup, which South Africa will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Bavuma Talks About the Long Break and the Bigger Picture
Bavuma said the time away from the format has felt unusually long, and he is simply looking forward to being back on the field with the group. He also stressed that the side wants to keep protecting its recent ODI momentum.
"There’s a strong desire to look after our ODI record of late and ensure that we’re putting our best foot forward," Bavuma said.
"It’s been a super long break for me personally, so just being out there again, running around and chasing after the balls with the guys, that’s something I look forward to."
He added that the next few months should help sharpen South Africa’s World Cup thinking, with up to nine ODIs coming against Australia, Bangladesh and England.
Selection Questions Around the Top Order and Pace Attack
One of the main decisions for the first ODI is who opens alongside de Kock. Bavuma has played both as an opener and at number three, but he said his own role will remain inside the top three.
His exact position is still undecided, and Tony de Zorzi gives the team another option at the top. Aiden Markram adds another wrinkle, because he is only available for the second and third matches of the series.

The Tests Are Already Looming in the Background
Although the focus is on the white-ball series, the three-Test contest that follows is hard to ignore. The Test matches are part of the ICC World Test Championship and will be the first meeting between South Africa and Australia since the 2025 final at Lord’s, which South Africa won.
Bavuma admitted that talk of the Tests is already creeping into ODI conversations. He described the match-up as one many fans will be waiting for, especially if both teams are near full strength.
"It’s very hard not to find yourself speaking about the Test series, even though you’re within the ODI space," he said.
"It’s highly anticipated. Both teams, fully fit, having their best players will allow for a proper game of cricket."
For now, though, he said the group is trying to keep those thoughts in check and deal with the Tests when they arrive.
